Environmental sustainability is at the core of BMI’s business. By providing reuse and recycling services for outdated telecommunications and electronics equipment, BMI helps society meet its current need to manage outdated materials, while at the same time conserving resources. BMI seeks to provide these services in an environmentally-sound, safe manner and, as such, has developed an Environmental, Health and Safety Management System (EHS MS) with three external audit certifications. The Management System is the documented foundation for management of environmental, health and safety risks within our organization and helps to facilitate BMI’s commitment to continually improve its EHS performance.

Each year “Team BMI” — a cross-functional group of employees responsible for maintaining and implementing the Management System — reviews the significant EHS risks associated with our activities and sets goals and programs to address these risks. We received Golden Gate recognition in 2012 and Sharp recognition in 2013 from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health for our occupational health and safety program and exemplary injury record. All electronic waste leaving our facility for further reuse and recycling is carefully tracked for final disposition to ensure proper handling. Each of the downstream companies with which we do business is reviewed annually for their continued adherence to BMI’s standards and protocols as part of our Responsible Recycling (R2) certification.

As we continue to expand our operations, maintaining a proactive environmental, health and safety program that involves individuals at all levels within the organization is critical. I commend all BMI employees on their contributions towards achieving our EHS performance goals.

BMI is committed to ensuring all electronic waste materials shipped to entities in its downstream recycling chain are handled in a manner that is protective to the environmental and human health. As such, it has incorporated the requirements of the Responsible Recycling (R2) standard into its EHS MS and business practices. BMI seeks to encourage its downstream partners to also subscribe to this standard, preferring to work with entities that are also certified to ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and R2. We ensure all materials shipped from the site are packed and transported safely and in full conformance with environmental and transportation regulations. All shipped tonnage is carefully tracked for final destination to ensure proper handling.

BMI is proud to be a key service provider for organizations seeking to manage their e-waste in a responsible, sustainable manner. One of BMI’s major clients earned EPA’s WasteWise National Partner of the Year Award for Very Large Companies by diverting over 1.6 million pounds of e-waste and other materials from landfills.
